Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

Well, after waking me up at least 3 times last night (I lost track), Avi woke up this morning as her usual happy self and we have had a wonderful Thanksgiving with all our family! I'm so glad she was feeing good today after last night!

My parents showed up at about 8am to help get things started. I had put Mom in charge of the turkey (after her insistent prodding that as the "hostess" I needed to delegate, delegate, DELEGATE! Okay fine, you get the turkey! HA! Lol), so she got busy with that while my dad set up a couple of coolers with drinks and got out the Johnny Cake he had made at home for our breakfast. That's a tradition I plan to keep going...Johnny Cake for breakfast on Thanksgiving morning while watching Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, all while turkey preparations are underway.

15 pound turkey, 13 pound baby, lol!

Me and my Monkey! 10 weeks old today!

Smiling at her Uncle Sam

Scott's family arrived around noon-ish with a bunch of pre-dinner snacks and the rest of the trimmings. My mom timed the turkey perfectly and it was finished right before 2:30 (which was her goal! GO MOM!!), and she, Brenda and Susan all helped me prepare the rest of the side dishes while Scott carved the turkey. We sat down to eat at about 3:30. I fed Avi right before dinner started, so she was passed out in her chair for most of it. :-) Grandpa and Letha came over for dinner also, and we all had a wonderful time! Sam stopped by after dinner for a little while to say hi...he was a traitor and had dinner with friends. :-P

I scored a cute outfit for Avi a few weeks ago at Babies R Us, and couldn't pass it up (It was on SALE! I can't help myself, lol!). It says "Thankful for Mommy and Daddy". It's perfect! Of course she had NO idea what the heck was going on today, but I love the outfit because we are so so so thankful for HER! As I mentioned previously, last Thanksgiving I wasn't feeling too cheery or thankful (even though I knew I still had LOTS to be thankful for...), and this year our prayers we answered and we have our precious child in our arms! She is our biggest reason to be thankful this year...and she's not that big. :::wink::: Hehe. :-) I wonder what NEXT Thanksgiving will bring?? Haha, I'm just kidding!! :-P Seriously, though, God has blessed us with way more than we ever could have asked or imagined, in every sense of the phrase. We have each other (I love you Scott!!), our precious daughter, our families and friends, our health, a wonderful house, jobs, and the list goes on...

The first song that comes to mind on thankfulness is the one in Veggie Tale's Madame Blueberry. Lol, go figure. Unfortunately youtube has failed me and there aren't any videos of The Thankfulness Song in its entirety, but here is a short clip. I love Veggie Tales! And thanks to my dad, Avi is accumulating quite the collection of Veggie Tales DVD's! Yaaaay! :-D

Poor Baby :-(

Avi had her 2 month appt today and got 2 shots. She got the shots at about 2pm and I got home around 3. She ate and then has been sleeping the rest of the afternoon/evening except to wake up and eat a couple times. I tried to feed her again before putting her to bed around 9:30, but instead she threw up a TON...like everything she had eaten at the previous feeding. She spits up a lot, but this was waaaay more than I've ever seen come out of her and it was forceful! Poor baby. :-( And she was not interested in eating anything afterwards either, which is weird. When she spits up a bunch she's ready to eat again right away, but this time she went right back to sleep and is still sleeping. I hope she feels better in the morning. :-(

We only got 2 shots today instead of the typical 4 + 1 oral. We got the DTaP and HIB, and she'll get the Pc shot and Rotavirus oral liquid in 3 weeks. We're spreading them out a little bit so her body doesn't have to process as many toxins all at once. Since I have 2 MTHFR mutations, chances are she has at least one if not both of the ones I have, and that reduces the efficiency with which the body processes and excretes toxins. It is not well researched (MTHFR in general is not well researched...), so we're taking the precautionary approach while still vaccinating. We'll be skipping the Hep B and Polio vaccines for now (and our pediatrician says those really aren't necessary at this point anyway, even though the AAP schedule gives them now). I was very happy to learn that the brands they use do not contain mercury, even their flu shot (which she's not old enough for this year) is mercury free. That is awesome, as mercury was my biggest concern. But they do still contain aluminium and other chemicals/preservatives.

Her official two month stats are as follows:
Weight: 13 lbs 2 oz--90th percentile
Length: 23 inches--75th percentile
Head Circ: 15 3/4 inches--75th percentile

So in the past 14 days she's only gained 8 oz. That is still totally normal, but a lot slower than the previous 14 days, lol! We also are switching from Zantac to Prevacid to see if that is a bit more effective at controlling her acid reflux. The Zantac seemed to be hit or miss whether it would work for her or not. Some days the spitting didn't seem to bother her at all (and therefore the zantac was working...she'd still spit up but it wouldn't hurt her), and other days she would still cry before and after spitting up like it was bothering her. :-( Her pedi said it might just be colic, but we'll know for sure if the Prevacid doesn't make a dramatic difference. But with the timing of her fussiness and then spitting up, I really do think it's a reflux issue.

Okay, I'm off to bed. Big day tomorrow! Gobble-gobble!

Is it weird that I still think of things like: 10 weeks ago at this time I was just getting comfortable with my epidural. She would be born about 6 hours from now...
Sometimes I wish I could go back and relive it all so I can savor and take in every second. It all seems like such a blur!!

:::Sigh:::

Goodnight!

Time marches on...

I remember when September 19th seemed SO so far away. It seemed to approach at a snails pace. How the heck did it turn into November 19th??? Goodness. Today at Mom's Group Avi weighed 12 pounds 15.6 ounces...so just barely under 13 pounds! THEN she had two massively dirty diapers, which I'm convinced accounted for at LEAST an ounce...so I'm sticking with 12-15 for today's official weight, LOL! Speaking of massively dirty diapers...it was so bad I had to take her carseat apart and wash the padding. And her clothes. Twice. I'm so glad she was already in the carseat and we were on our way home when I heard the noise. That would not have been fun to deal with in a public restroom changing station! It wasn't fun at home, but at least we were HOME. Oh the joys! :-P

After Mom's Group I went up to my floor and printed off the December schedule. The one I'm on. As in, I go back to work in just over 3 weeks. :::sad face::: I also put in my requests for the January schedule. For now I'm trying to work two days together as much as possible, but I do have a couple single days in there too. We'll see how this goes. I did get some good news about some changes happening at work...but I won't spill the beans until they're for sure happening. It has nothing to do with me personally, just a few "process" type changes. But from the sounds of it it seems like I may have a little more quality/quantity time with my patients and also time to PUMP...which I was starting to stress out about because I will NEED to pump once I go back to work, it won't be an option anymore!

And on that front, I'm excited to say that Scott put Avi to bed tonight without any help from me...he did her bath, got her into her pj's, gave her a bottle and she was totally zonked out. She did wake up about 30 minutes later, but he went in and put her back to sleep. I stayed out of our room completely so she wouldn't know I was there. If she had seen or heard me she may have refused the bottle and may not have gone back to sleep. I'm SO glad it worked and I feel so much better already about having to leave her at night! I have no doubts about Scott being able to handle her, he is AWESOME with her. But that doesn't change the fact that she's not used to being away from me and especially at night. If we can do this a few more times successfully I will be much more confident about going back to work!

Actually, since she's been asleep for over 2 hours now I should probably go to bed. She has only been sleeping 4 to 5 hours for her first stretch of nighttime sleep and then wakes up every 2 to 3 hours after that. So much for 7, 8 or 9 hours straight like we were getting! That only lasted about 3 weeks...but it was SO nice while it did last! :-)

Goodnight!

2 Months

Already! Yes, I'm going to be saying that a lot. It just doesn't seem like two months have passed since she was placed in our arms!! We are so so thankful to have our sweet girl with us and thank God every day for this opportunity and blessing of being her parents! One year ago this Thursday I had an appointment with my Dr, which was one of many appointments last fall, but at that particular appt I left with a paper in my hand with several referral options for a Reproductive Endocrinologist. Thankfully it was only another 3 months before I was back in Dr. A's office 10 weeks pregnant. But we didn't know that was going to happen, and I remember leaving that day feeling so down and depressed because the prior three months of Clomid therapy had failed, and the paper in my hand was just one more reminder that my body was broken. One thing I often do when I feel that way is tell myself to imagine that day one year in the future. So I did. I had no idea if we'd be holding a sweet baby in our arms or not, but I made myself believe we'd be at least one step closer.

And look where we are. :-)
11/15/10
This was yesterday...trying out the Bumbo seat! Haha, that expression is too funny..."Um, Mom? What the heck is this thing? Do I like it??"

Love her!!! I wish you could hear the sound effects... "Did that sound come out of ME?" 11/16/10
Happy 2 months sweet girl!! (Same outfit as her 1 month photo...except this time with babylegs leg warmers...it was kinda chilly in the house this morning!)

Love love love this chubby little face!!!

Miss Aveline is 2 months old today, and starting to show off her bubbly little personality! She babbles and coos almost non-stop when she's awake and happy. This past week she has started to chew on her hands...mostly just trying to shove her whole fist in her mouth all at once, lol. She hasn't found her thumb yet, and I don't know that she will. She isn't a pacifier baby...we've tried a few different kinds and it stays in her mouth for less time than it takes to get her to take it in the first place! She's also started smiling a LOT more...and I've even gotten a few little giggles out of her! The best thing in the whole world is when she hasn't seen me for a little while and then all of a sudden realizes I'm there and gives me the biggest grin ever. ::::heart melting!:::: She's done that a few times in the morning when I go to pick her up out of the swing (still sleeping in the swing due to reflux...although we don't have it swinging anymore, it's just so she can sleep inclined). That's the best way to start the day! :-)

Oh yes, and I did see Dr. A again today to follow up on my blood pressure. I've been taking it at home twice a day these past two weeks, and while it is still borderline, I don't need to be on medication. YAY! I forgot to ask about whether she thought my pre-hypertensive pressures are PCOS related or not, but I'm going to assume they are seems how it is part of the syndrome. By the way, a pretty "normal" pressure for me is 120's and 130's over 70's and 80's. Sometimes they'll be in the one-teens over sixties, but not often. They used to consider 120/80 to be the "textbook" blood pressure, but now it is considered pre-hypertensive. At least that's what we were told in nursing school...

I have to go back to work in just 27 days. :-( :-( :-( I am actually looking forward to working again in the sense that I miss my co-workers...they are a huge part of my social life and I love them all!!...and I do love my job. Oh, and there's the money part...getting paid 2/3 my normal pay isn't much fun. I also feel like I can be so much more helpful to the new mommies I will take care of now that I've actually experienced first hand what they are and will be experiencing! But I'm dreading the schedule change back to night shifts again, and of course I'm dreading leaving my little Avi girl at home! I know she'll be with Daddy or one of her grandmas whenever I'm gone, but it's still hard knowing I won't be there when I have been there for her 24/7 for the past YEAR! (Minus a few hours for the couple times Scott and I went out without her and the times I've gone to the store while Daddy watched her...) I won't be there to nurse her to sleep at night, or to do her 4am feeding (or any other time she wakes up in the middle of the night...usually it's once but sometimes it's two or three times!). And then if I have to go back to work the next night I will be coming home and sleeping so I won't be there during the day either! UGH!! At least that will only be about 1 day a week. If I'm NOT going back to work the next night I plan to just come home and try to take a nap with her in the morning. But man, I'm totally dreading this schedule...will I ever sleep again?? And is she going to scream all night if she has to take a bottle at bedtime and 4am instead of Mommy?? Trust me, we're practicing now, but it's not going so well yet. We've crashed and burned the two or three times we've tried giving her a bottle at bedtime instead. :-( :-(

I guess there is a reason you don't remember anything before about 3 years of age. If she screams all night until she figures out that the bottle is the only way she's going to get food that night, it won't kill her. I'm not sure about Daddy though...I feel bad for him! Hopefully she gets the hang of this bottle thing sooner rather than later...

:::sigh:::

Man, I wanted to end on a happy note!

Oh yeah...MY BABY GIRL IS TWO MONTHS OLD!!! I love her. SO so much.

And I like this song...

GER

And I don't mean "GRRR!" Although sometimes I feel like saying that!! GER stands for Gastro-Esophageal Reflux. Avi has it. I knew she spit-up a lot, and I didn't think it was normal but the pediatrician told me it was at her 2 week appt. Well, in the past week or two it has gotten worse and she's also been much more fussy, especially in the mornings and evenings, and she'd cry before and after spitting up. Where'd my happy baby go? :-( I almost called the pedi about this a couple times last week, and finally did this morning because I could not make her happy. She would spit, cry, spit, cry, spit, cry. She seemed miserable! They got us in this afternoon, and he agreed with my suspicians and gave us an Rx for Zantac. She got her first dose this evening, and right now is sleeping like a log. Yay! So hopefully this is the quick and easy answer and it's not something more complicated. We'll go back in 2 weeks for her normal 2-month well visit as well as to evaluate whether the Zantac is working or not. If it's not, we can try Prevacid instead.

Despite all this, it certainly isn't affecting her weight. She weighed 12-10 this afternoon. She was 12-2 five days ago and 11-5 twelve days ago. We have a chunker! :-P

And now some pictures (of course!). :-)

7 Weeks

Already?? :::sniff-sniff::: Where'd my tiny newborn go?? Okay, okay, so she was never the definition of tiny, but seriously--she's getting so big!! It seems like she's doing something new almost every day, to which I make a mental note that "I need to blog about that!" but then someone, and I won't name names, seems to keep me super busy and I find myself days and weeks later without having blogged about much at all!! *sigh* Where does the time go??

Last week at Mommy's Group she weighed 11 lbs 5 oz, so only a 5 oz gain that week, which is quite normal but less than what she had been gaining. I will be weighing her again tomorrow. I don't do it out of concern, she's gaining wonderfully, just out of curiosity. :-) I am, however, getting more concerned about her spitting up issue. Maybe concerned isn't the right word, cause I'm not real worried about it, but I do wonder if she has a reflux problem and not just "spitting up". She spits up after almost every feeding, and at least half the time it's a pretty decent amount...we're talking an ounce or two, sometimes more. It's not projectile, but it's also more forceful than just a dribble. Once in awhile she acts uncomfortable, but mostly it's just messy. I can deal with the messy part, but I don't like how much she's spitting up. I'll ask the pediatrician about it again at her 2 month appt on the 17th. I mentioned it at her 2 week appt and he wasn't concerned, but that may be different now that I have more info and it's been going on this whole time. We'll see! But she's certainly thriving despite this issue, as evidenced by her growing fat rolls, lol!

One big milestone she just reached is rolling from her tummy to her back. I caught her doing it Tuesday morning so I immediately put her back on her tummy and she did it again! Later that afternoon I pulled out the video camera, but didn't really expect her to do it again, but she did! I was shocked! And of course proud. :-D She did it again today, so it's not just a fluke! :-P If I can figure out how to upload the video I will...

Tuesday morning I had my postpartum doctor's visit. I took Avi with me and she was mostly good. I fed her really well right before we left, and she fell asleep in the car, but then woke up again once we got there (she sleeps well if she's in motion, lol!). Once we were in the room, the MA took my blood pressure and it was through the roof...literally. 178/100. Say WHAT??? So onto my left side I went. And Avi, since she was getting sick of her carseat by this point (she'd been in it for an hour and honestly had been very happy/patient the whole time), went out to the desk with the MA (she offered). When Dr. A rechecked my BP it was still 140/80, but even that is much better than the initial one! Good grief! I know my BP has been borderline off and on the past few years, but it has never been as high as that first one. Three years ago, on Thanksgiving actually, it was 150/100 one day at work. I remember feeling weird...and feeling like my heart was about ready to beat out of my chest as I was at work and was shocked to see my BP that high. I attributed it to my birth control and stopped taking it a couple months later. My heart rate and BP settled down considerably. Well, this time I don't FEEL like it's high, but apparently it is. I'm taking it at home for the next 2 weeks and then will go back to see Dr. A again for a re-check and possible med discussion. I wonder if the borderline high BP is related to my PCOS. I know it's one of the symptoms. Ugh.

Picture time!!

10/24/10
Yep, totally looks like Daddy. :-D

10/30/10 I caught her mid-grin! :-) Grandma with the little kitty! First halloween (the costume lasted about 10 minutes...then she got fussy and ended up in the Moby wrap, haha)

Sleep

:::knocks on wood:::

Just thought I should get that out of the way early so I don't jinx anything by writing what I'm about to write. LOL!

Avi is a really good night-time sleeper. Her first two weeks she slept in 3-4hr chunks at night, rarely she would wake up after only 2 hrs from her last feeding. At about 2 weeks old it increased to 4-6hr stretches. And since she was 3 weeks old she's been sleeping 7-8hrs in a row at night, wakes up for a quick feeding, and then sleeps another 3hrs! We're starting to get a little routine down now, too. She typically cluster feeds in the evening, and then we give her a bath around 9pm, lotion, jammies and feed her again and then she's out by 10 or 10:30 until 5 or 6am!! I know this isn't typical for newborns, so I consider us very lucky! I also know she could mix it up on us at any point, so it might not last...

She's been kinda cranky the past few nights starting around 6pm, so tonight I decided to try putting her to bed earlier. I fed her at 7pm, bath at 7:30 followed by lotion and jammies and then fed her again and she zonked out and was in her swing by 8pm (she's been a swing sleeper since we brought her home...it's working for now so we're not messing with it for a couple more weeks!). I'm thinking she may have just been over-tired the past few nights (thus the fussy evenings) and needs the extra few hours of sleep, but I guess we'll see how tonight goes! She hasn't been sleeping/napping well during the day unless I'm out running errands. Driving puts her to sleep. :-)

All in all, we've been very lucky with her sleep patterns, and I've been getting about 8hrs a night...I sleep about 6hrs during her first stretch and then another couple hours when she goes back to sleep. And I haven't needed any naps during the day. I don't know what I'm going to do when I go back to work, though! I'll probably just be a zombie, lol! December 13th just needs to stay FAR far away...

Speaking of sleep, it's almost 9:30pm so I'd better go to bed in case she decides to wake up early because I put her to bed early.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Chunky Monkey!

At Mommy's group today (that's what I'm gonna call the breastfeeding support group from now on...) I weighed Monkey and she was 11 pounds exactly! That means she's gained 20 ounces in the past 14 days...holy cow! She's going to be at least 12 pounds by her 2 month appt...probably closer to 13 (her appt is on Nov. 17th). She has officially outgrown her newborn clothes, except for one outfit which is particularly large, lol. And most of the 0-3 month stuff fits perfectly now, although some is still huge on her. It's amazing how much clothing size differs based on brand. Newborn clothes typically fit through 8.5 pounds, but she was able to wear hers two pounds past that. And some stuff that's supposed to fit from 8 to 12 pounds is still HUGE on her, and she's 11 pounds! Weird. I am very happy we got 5 weeks worth of wear out of her newborn clothes, though! That's one thing I'll do differently next time is have a few more newborn outfits, because at the very beginning the 0-3 stuff was WAY too big and we didn't have much newborn stuff because we thought she was going to be too big! And technically, based on the tags, she WAS too big...but whatever! I have to say, the First Moments brand from Kohls is one of the biggest...also Circo brand from Target. Both run HUGE. Carters is pretty much right on, and Gerber runs about a whole size smaller than the tag claims. Ha, there's my 5 weeks worth of baby clothes experience, lol!

Okay, I'm seriously rambling. Sorry for being a bore! HAHA! :-P

Weight Chart for my own memory (haha!):

Birth 9/16: 8-14
Night of 9/17: 8-5
1st appt 9/20: 8-7
2wk appt 9/30: 9-0
Mom group 10/8: 9-12
Mom group 10/22: 11-0

Sorry, no pictures this time!

One Month Old!

Geez time sure is flying. How come it seemed sooooo sloooooow while I was pregnant, but now it's just zooming by in a blur?? So not inducive to savoring the tiny-baby stage!!

Anyway, here is our little Avi girl on 10/15/10...yes I know it's one day early, but I was in Colorado (another blog post...) and knew I wouldn't get a good opportunity on the 16th because we'd be in the car driving all day.

10/15/10

Her eyes look really blue in this picture. They were a REALLY deep/dark blue when she was born, and have been lightening up over the past month. They're still a medium-darkish blue, and oh so pretty!! Of course we're wondering if they'll stay blue...time will tell (and I'm okay with that time slowing down a bit!!!)! Daddy's eyes are brown (there is blue in his family though...), so who knows!

Oh, and on her REAL one-month birthday she started giving me the biggest purposeful smiles!! I was so excited!! She still isn't smiling a ton or consistantly, but a couple times a day she'll just give us the biggest grin! Melts my heart! Hopefully I'll catch one of her purposeful smiles on camera one of these days, but here are a few random smiles I did catch from her first month...

9/21--5 days old

9/27--Dream Smiles :-)
10/4--This one may have been intentional!
10/6--Half smirk/smile, too cute!!

Happy one month Baby Girl!! We love you SO much!

Tummy Time

I started doing tummy time with Avi when she was about three weeks old. I don't know why I waited, one day it just occurred to me that I should throw a blanket on the floor and play with her instead of holding her constantly, hehe. Plus, the first 2-3 weeks of life pretty much entailed sleep, wake up for diaper change, eat, spit up and eat some more (lol), back to sleep, repeat. I started to notice longer alert and awake periods at about 3 weeks. So anyway, I pulled out a blanket and onto her tummy she went. I started snapping pictures, and this is what happened...

"Oh look! Fuzz!"

"I wonder what it tastes like?"

:::nom nom nom:::

"Ewww."

So tummy time lasted all of about five minutes before I had to rescue the apparently starving baby and feed her. :-P Here's another picture of her later that morning:

10/6/10--20 days old
Remember how I said she sleeps, eats, spits up and eats some more? Yeah, I wasn't kidding...she's quite the spitter!! Thus the clothing change. Sometimes several times a day...good thing we have lots of outfits!! But we did get smart and started putting bibs on her most of the time. And we always have a burp cloth (or two or ten) nearby. She rarely burps for us, but she sure does spit!! She's gaining weight really well despite the spitting issue, though. At her two-week check up on Sept 30th she weighed exactly 9 pounds...although I don't know how accurate it was because it wasn't a digital scale, it was one of those kinds where you have to slide the little piece until the bar levels out...and then on Oct 8th at our Breastfeeding Support Group she was 9-12!! That was almost two weeks ago (already!) and I will be weighing her again on the 22nd. I have a feeling she's over 11 pounds now...we shall see!

Her Name

The most common response we get when we tell people our daughter's name is "where did you find that?" No, we did not make it up. Yes, it is a real name. :-) And I found it online doing random searches for baby names. I don't even remember what specifically I was googling at the time, but I came upon this article and was skimming the names and meanings. When I saw the Irish name Aibhlinn meant "longed for child", I immediately did some more research as I had NO idea how to pronounce it, nor did I like the spelling...but the meaning had instantly attracted me. I discovered that it is pronounced "Ave-leen" or "Av-el-een". I also found many ways to spell it, some starting with 'E' and others with 'A', and some of the endings including 'leen', 'line', or 'lyn'. Our favorite "American" spelling of this name was Aveline.

At first I almost didn't even mention the name to Scott as I was SURE he wouldn't like it. He hadn't liked any of the other "different" names I had suggested. And we were likely just going to go with Hannah or Rebekah as we had always planned (even before we were expecting). But to my suprise he didn't shoot it down, and said he actually thought it was pretty. The more we thought about it, the more we fell in love. We liked both Hannah and Rebekah, but had no special connection to their meanings. Aveline was both beautiful and meant something special to us, AND it was unique but not made-up. Our little girl was most definitely a "longed for child", and with our history we couldn't think of anything more appropriate. We loved it!

We also decided to give her two middle names because Scott has two middle names. After throwing around many many options we finally settled on Brianna Renee. Brianna is a combination of both Brenda and Dianna (Scott's mom and my mom respectively), and Renee is my birthmom Heather's middle name. So not only did we like how it flowed, but we would be honoring all three grandmas. WINNER! :-D

And that is how she became Aveline Brianna Renee. A mouthful? Yes. Full of meaning? Absolutely. I hope someday she will love and appreciate it as much as we do.

Aveline surrounded by her grandmas :-)

Happy Birthday!

Today was Scott's 25th birthday (Woohoo for lower car insurance rates!!), and we decided to be brave and venture out to Red Lobster with our little Monkey. She did fabulous and slept in her carseat the whole time! And I learned something new, apparently restaurants have these cool infant seat holder things so that the carseat can be at table level without having to move the kiddo. Nice! Scott wouldn't let me tell the waiter it was his birthday, so no free desert for him. Personally, I would have risked being sung to if it meant free desert...but that's just me. :-P After dinner we went to Half Price Books and Game Stop so Scott could shop...that was his birthday present this year. Those stores are to him like clothing stores are to me, and I quite frequently just ask for a spending allowance to buy more clothes for my birthday in lieu of actual gifts...shopping IS my gift! So we did the same thing for him this year. We were both happy: he got to go to two of his favorite stores and buy stuff, and I didn't have to tote a 2 week old around by myself trying to find a birthday gift for Daddy beforehand! Win-win!

Happy birthday to my dear husband!! I am thankful for the seven (and a half--I was in Turkey that first year, so does it count??) birthdays I've had the opportunity to celebrate with you and hope we have many many more together (like, at LEAST fifty more, okay?)!!!

EDIT: We also had a mini celebration at home on the 3rd, but since I wasn't feeling well our mothers stepped in and made dinner and my dad made a cake...okay, Bashas made a cake, my dad went and got it. :-P I had fully intended on making one myself, but I just HAD to come down with a stupid fever that day (another story). Anywho, Sloppy Joes and chocolate cake were enjoyed by all. :-) Even Monkey joined us at the table in her little rocking chair (on top of the coffee table, lol)!

I felt bad for not doing more, but Scott reassured me he had a good birthday anyway. I guess there was only so much I could do with a 2 week old. Perhaps I can make up for it next year. :-)

One week ago today...

...our precious little girl, Aveline Brianna Renee, entered this world. And this is the story of her birth.

September 14th, 2010: My last Dr's appt went well. I had progressed from 1cm the week prior to 2cm so Dr. A stripped my membranes for me, but she said my cervix was not completely ready for labor yet. She asked me if I was okay with just being patient for another week. I said "physically, yes...I feel great. But mentally I'm done." So she scheduled me for an outpatient Prostaglandin Gel induction that Thursday the 16th because she was going to be on-call at the hospital that day. Gel inductions do not usually start labor immediately, their purpose is to "ripen" or prepare the cervix for labor, so most people going in for this type of induction are sent home a few hours later to wait for labor to begin (which could be hours to days later). At least this was a starting point to the end. I was at the point where I just needed our sweet little girl in my arms, to know that she was safe, and to put the last 19+ months behind me. My doctor also wrote me a note to be off of work from that point on, as I was scheduled to work Wednesday and Thursday nights...and there was no way that was going to happen if I was going to be induced Thursday morning.

September 15th, 2010: I woke up at 2am and could not for the life of me go back to sleep. I finally gave up around 4am and watched TV for a couple hours, falling asleep on the couch at around 6 and not waking up until 10:30am. Little did I know that would be the last sleep I got for about 36 hours! I was excited about the following day's induction, and figured I'd better get the house clean just in case I ended up staying at the hospital on the 16th instead of being sent home. I dusted, swept, mopped, vacuumed, and cleaned bathrooms. Somehow the kitchen escaped me. At 5:15pm I went to get a pedicure, mostly just for fun but also kinda hoping the old wives tale was true about pedicures starting labor. The technician asked my due date, and I could tell she looked a little nervous. She even told me to tell her if I started contracting...but I wasn't about to say anything about the braxton hicks I had been having all day, and even now while sitting in her chair. After the pedicure I stopped by the grocery store to pick up a few things for dinner. I got home at about 6:45 and started cooking the lasagna hamburger helper we had planned on, along with steamed broccoli and french bread.

We sat down to dinner at about 7:20, arguing about whether or not we'd be having a baby the next day...I was trying to explain to Scott that gel inductions do not usually result in labor and it was an outpatient induction...we would be coming home. The whole thing had started when he told me he had said "goodbye" to all his coworkers that evening, in preparation for having the next week off. I got irritated because the plan was for him to be off Thursday for the induction and back to work on Friday...of course assuming there was no baby yet. I kept telling him "We're (probably) not having a baby tomorrow, it's an OUTPATIENT induction!!" He kept insisting that he understood, but that he still hoped it would be tomorrow. I responded with "Yeah, well, me too, but it just doesn't usually work that way." An annoyed silence ensued. Not even 60 seconds later, I felt a strange "pop", and for a split second my brain registered it as a strangely placed punch down low from Monkey. But when a warm and fast gush followed, my eyes immediately bugged out, I let out a surprised gasp, and jumped up and told Scott "that may have just been our free ticket..." as I ran to the bathroom.

There was no mistaking it, my water had definitely broken. I yelled for Scott to bring me an old towel, which I quickly pulled up between my legs to stop the waterfall. "Um, I guess you win" I admitted to Scott...as I slowly realized that this was it...there was no question about it, we were having this baby tonight. There was no wondering whether or not I was in labor, whether the contractions I was having were still the annoying old braxton hicks I'd had for weeks...we got the free pass to labor and delivery (which I had secretly hoped would happen all along)! I HAD been having braxton hicks anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes apart all day long, and they were slightly stronger than what I'd felt in the weeks prior, but still none of them were what I would call painful nor did they stop me from going about my regular business that day. But now it didn't matter, I didn't have to wonder what was a real contraction and what wasn't...we got the free pass!! And as a side note, even with all those braxton hicks I had had since 28-ish weeks I never once had a real contraction until after my water broke...and I can say that now having felt the difference, lol!!

So with a towel pulled up between my legs I waddled from our guest bathroom into our bathroom, still dazed and not quite sure where to start. With every move I felt another gush. I sat down on the edge of the bathtub in an attempt to stop the gushing, and asked Scott to bring my phone. It was about 7:30pm, and I called Dr. A on her cell phone to let her know what was going on. Then I finished my dinner, still sitting on the edge of the bathtub.

(It's 5:06am right now...our little girl is exactly 1 week old!!)

I wasn't exactly sure how to go about packing the last-minute items into my bag, get dressed and get to the car without making a huge mess. At this point I was now standing in the bathtub, afraid to step out and get the floor all wet. I changed my (soaked) shorts and underwear and tried stuffing a hand towel inside them to keep them dry...oh how I wished I had one of those huge postpartum pads from work!! The handtowel, even though it was thick, only lasted a couple minutes. I finally decided there was no way I was going to make it to the hospital with dry clothes, so I gave up and hoisted another huge bath towel up between my legs and waddled around the bathroom grabbing last minute things as Scott helped and carried stuff to the front door. It was both comical and frustrating at the same time, because I literally couldn't move without leaking! By shortly after 8pm we were in the car and headed to the hospital, Scott calling people to let them know what was happening, and me sitting stunned on a trash bag and two bath towels in the front seat. I was starting to feel contractions...they felt like mild menstrual cramps, only instead of constant they came and went...the whole way to the hospital they were exactly 3 minutes apart. I was slightly paranoid because I hadn't felt Monkey move since my water had broken about 45 minutes previously. I was probably just too distracted to notice, but it still bothered me and I sat there pushing on my belly trying to get a response out of her. In the back of my mind I had been worried about her umbilical cord possibly being in the way and getting caught when my water broke...comes from knowing too much about what can happen I guess...and with the constant gushing I was having I knew her head wasn't super super low yet or it would have acted as a cork and stopped (or at least majorly slowed) the leaking after the initial break. Fortunately (for my sanity) she gave me a reassuring kick and a squirm just as we pulled up to the Emergency Room.

I asked Scott to go in for a wheelchair, as there was no way I was walking into the ER with a towel between my legs (HA!). I got registered, and then wheeled up to L&D...the floor I work on. It felt kinda strange (and I had been scheduled to work that night before Dr. A gave me the note to be off!). It had to have been close to 9pm when I got situated in bed and on the monitor. Oh how reassuring that monitor was!! Monkey was very happy on the monitor, and so was I...I was finally here...and I finally felt safe. It was at this point that I knew everything would be fine...we wouldn't be leaving without a baby in our arms...which is something I had questioned every.single.day since January 11th when I saw that second line. I can honestly say I enjoyed the last 8 to 9 hours of my pregnancy the most, because I truly wasn't worried about a single thing! Go figure. I was also relieved to find out that I got one of our charge nurses, Courtney, as my labor nurse. Almost any of them would have been fine, but I had still wondered who I would actually end up with when the time came and I was very glad it was her. She got me admitted, did the fern test for amniotic fluid (as if there was a question, haha! I think they have to do it anyway for their log book...), started my IV, drew my blood, and checked my cervix. I was still 2cm, same as in the office the previous day, and I was only rating the contractions at a 2-3 on the pain scale. She said I should get up and walk for an hour to try and make the contractions stronger before thinking about an epidural. At that point, I wasn't sure if I'd be getting an epidural or not. My plan all along was to just see how things went. I got out of bed, and the contractions immediately got stronger...I'd say maybe a 4-5, but definitely still bearable.

Scott looked at his watch and announced that we had to walk until 10:45 (1 hour). I was starting to feel less and less thrilled about that with each passing minute. About 5 minutes into walking (we were just making big circles out in the waiting room at this point), his parents and oldest brother showed up. They said hi and then sat down on the other side of the waiting room out of sight. That made me happy, as I really didn't want to be around anyone at the moment. The contractions got really bad really fast, and I finally knew what "can't walk or talk through them" meant. Scott finally knew what it was like to lose feeling in his hands. Now we were just pacing back and forth slowly, and it seemed like we'd only get 10 feet before another contraction would hit and I'd be paralyzed again. I asked Scott what time it was. 10:05. "Are you kidding me, it's only been 20 minutes??" I told him I didn't know if I'd make it a whole hour...I also told him I could probably do this longer if they weren't so close together, but they were literally right on top of each other...the contractions seemed longer than the break inbetween them...and I had only been 2cm...I was beginning to like the idea of the epidural...ALOT. By 10:15 I had had enough and went back to my room and admitted to Courtney that I wanted the epidural...asap. The contractions were at about 8-9 on the pain scale now. She started my fluid bolus and I signed consents. The next 30 minutes were kind of a blur...I know it felt like 2hrs as I watched the IV fluid run in thinking it would never finish. It was impossible to get comfortable in bed and all I could do was breath through each contraction and squeeze something...mostly Scott's hand...he's probably glad I didn't wait any longer for the epidural too!! The epidural was placed around 10:45, and by 11pm I was almost pain free. Courtney checked my cervix again around 11:15 and I was a whopping 2 1/2 cm. Boy was I glad I got that epidural! At this time she also started pitocin.

Epiduralized and happy! :-P
I was a little shocked at how soon I needed the epidural. I typically have a pretty high pain tolerance, so I really was taken by suprise at how quickly things got painful after my water broke. But if a contraction at 2cm felt like that there was NO WAY I wanted to know what a contraction at 8cm felt like!! I was kinda feeling like a wimp until I remembered someone telling me that your water breaking makes contractions much much worse because you lose some of the "padding" the fluid provides. Makes sense. And I am in no way ashamed of getting that epidural! There's nothing like sitting in bed totally comfortable and watching your contractions on the monitor and NOT feeling them. Bliss! :-D And for the record, I had an AWESOME epidural, I never once felt pain once it took effect, and I could still move my legs, change positions, lift my bottom...it was awesome! And I could tell when someone touched me because of the pressure, but I couldn't feel it...if that makes any sense at all. Anyway, back to the story...

September 16th, 2010: My parents were now here, and my mom got comfortable in my room while my dad, after saying hi to me, joined Scott's family out in the waiting room. I had decided way back that I wanted my mom in the delivery room with me because I knew it would be special for her having never been through any of this herself as both Sam and I were adopted. For the next couple hours we tried to rest, but there was no sleep...too much anticipation to sleep! At ~2:30am Courtney checked me again and I was 5cm/90% and Monkey was starting to descend a little. She turned me onto my other side and put a big "peanut ball" between my legs to hold them open. This was supposed to help open up the pelvis to allow baby to drop lower into the birth canal, which would in turn put more pressure on my cervix and assist with dilation. As soon as the ball was in place I started feeling a little bit of pressure with each contraction, but nothing strong. An hour later she came back and checked me again, and to my shock I was 10cm!! Monkey had also come down a lot further, but not quite far enough to start pushing yet so she let me labor down for another hour or so. Around 4:15am she came back and we did some trial pushes. I pushed with maybe 3 or 4 contractions and I did so well that she said she would go ahead and call my doctor in...I'd be ready by the time she got here! We pushed with a couple more contractions as we waited for Dr. A to arrive, but then Courtney had me stop altogether because I was pushing so effectively! With the epidural it was the weirdest feeling...I mean, I knew I was pushing but I couldn't really tell WHERE I was pushing, nor could I feel anything (which was definitely a good thing!). But apparently I was doing a good job! She had even pulled a mirror out for me so I could see what I was doing, and with each push we could see a little bit more of Monkey's head...and her dark hair!!

Dr. A came in special for me (she wasn't supposed to be on-call until 7am that morning) and got there around 4:45am. I pushed with 3 or 4 more contractions and before I knew it there was a head sticking out of me...and then out came shoulders and a body...and let me tell you, THAT was a weird feeling because I could feel it, but it wasn't painful. I had seen this whole process over 100 times at my old job (Banner Desert), but this time it was ME and it felt so surreal. I was in shock as our daughter was placed on my now flat belly...Scott was standing to my right, but I don't know what he was doing...I think he was in shock too! I had envisioned this moment a million times, wondering exactly what would happen and what I would do. And now the moment was here, and I didn't know what to do! I couldn't cry, and at first I couldn't even talk. I think I managed a quiet "Hi baby!" as I stared for the first time at the face I'd been waiting so long to see. Our little Aveline...our "longed for child"...was finally here in my arms!! Her official birth time was 5:06am. A few seconds after she was handed to me I started rubbing her off with the towel to try and stimulate her to cry as Brenda, our nursery nurse, did the same thing and checked her out. It didn't take long before we heard a few gurgly cries. But Monkey was a little shocked too, so a minute or two later Brenda had to take her over to the warmer to give her some oxygen. She pinked up pretty quickly, and was crying well. Scott was over at the warmer with her and my mom got some pictures.

Right after she was born Holding Daddy's hand
Miss Aveline Big girl!

As my doctor worked on freeing my placenta and stitching me up, we all took guesses on Monkey's weight. I guessed 9lbs even. Dr. A was spot on at 8lbs 14oz...I think she's had a little too much practice at that, lol! Monkey was 20 inches long, and her apgars were 7 and 9 (thus her initial shock, haha). All in all, the whole labor lasted 9 hrs, and I couldn't have asked for an easier or smoother delivery, and we were both healthy. A few minutes later, Scott came over to the bed with our little girl in his arms. She was just staring up at him with wide open eyes. Again, I think we were both still in shock, and I really didn't know what to say. I just kept thinking "Thank you Jesus" over and over in my head. The past 19 months were finally over. Our precious girl was safe and healthy in our arms.

11 days...

Wait, did I just say 11 days? That's not much! And Monkey could really be here anytime before that too. Crazy!

Just wanted to update on our appt and ultrasound yesterday. Everything is looking good! My blood pressure is still bordering on the high side, but not enough to worry about. And my body is finally starting to prepare for letting this kiddo out, so that makes me very happy! Still having lots of braxton hicks, but still nothing painful...just tight and annoying.

Monkey is still measuring >90th percentile...so still big! But not as ginormous as I was fearing. She was estimated at 8 lbs 12 oz yesterday, which is totally doable! I honestly thought she might be in the 9 or 10 lb range, so I'm happy she's not THAT big (yet, lol). And she may even be smaller as these ultrasounds tend to overestimate. The only bummer is that, while she is still on the bigger side, she's not big enough to warrant an eviction notice at this point. In the long run that's probably a good thing as inductions do increase the risk of needing a c-section...but then again, so do big babies! Oh well. While I would definitely like to avoid a c-section if possible (like most women), I'm also not worried about having one should it become necessary. I'm more of a go-with-the-flow type person, and especially with labor there are SO many different ways things can go (good and bad) that I don't care to put myself in a box. For the most part, I know what can happen and I know the different options along the way and we'll decide when we're there. Which is why I'm not making a "birth plan". Don't get me started on those! The only thing I care about is ending up with a healthy baby and healthy Mommy. I don't really care how we get there!

Anywho, sorry for the little rant. All in all Monkey looks healthy, and she passed her BPP (bio-physical profile...basically it's the ultrasound version of the NST)...although she wasn't cooperating at first, little stinker. But she passed, and everything looks good. :-) Next appt is on the 14th and hopefully I'll have made a bit more progress by then. Of course, I wouldn't complain if I never made it to that appt because we have a baby instead! Haha, I can hope, right? :-P My Dr said if I go past my due date we'll talk about inducing so Monkey doesn't get too big. I have an appt scheduled for the 2oth, the day after my due date, so if the little lady is still in there at that point she may be issued an eviction notice at that time (and I don't necessarily mean THAT DAY, but we'd probably schedule something that day). :-)

Come on, baby, you can come out now!!

And here she is! The right side of the picture and her chin look a little funny because the umbilical cord is right in front of her face, but it's still a really good picture! LOVE those little lips!!

Official maternity pictures are coming once I get the CD at work tonight. :-)

19 days...

Aaaaand, now we're in the teens for the due date countdown! And yes I know it's approximate. She is allowed to be late. Although, if she's anything like her mommy she'll be just a little early** or right on time. If she's late, I'm blaming Daddy...

(Just wanted to clarify that whenever I use the words "early" or "late" from here on out it's just in relation to "before" or "after" my due date. She's full-term now, and is considered "on time" anytime between 37 and 42 weeks.)

Just a little quirk about me: I always have to be at least 10 minutes early when going somewhere in order to consider myself "on time". If I'm technically on time, I already feel late. Scott on the other hand is perfectly fine being exactly on time or a little bit late. This irritates me to no end!!! This is also kinda funny when you consider when we were both born: I was 5 weeks early (although it wasn't due to pre-term labor, my birthmom had PIH), and Scott was 1 day late. Coincidence? Hmmmm...

So. Dr's appt today was uneventful (the best kind!). My blood pressure was a tiny bit high at first, but normal upon re-check. And although Scott and I would like to have a labor-day-weekend baby, it appears that she is quite comfortable where she's at and is in no hurry to come out. No progress on that front...which means all the crazy braxton hicks contractions I've been having the past several weeks have done NOTHING. Nada. Zilch. Zero. NOT cool. They've started lasting longer too...at least every 5 minutes for several hours at a time instead of just a couple hours. But apparently my body is immune. :::rolls eyes::: Oh well, I can't be too impatient yet, I am still only 37 weeks.

Next Tuesday we'll have another ultrasound (the last one!!) to see how big she's measuring. I have a feeling it's going to estimate at least 9lbs, probaby 10. But I really REALLY don't think she's going to be overly huge. And my Dr said today that she'll probably be in the 8lb range...which is what I've been thinking all along. So hopefully both mother's instinct (if that exists, lol) and Dr's prediction from years of experience is right!

We basically have everything ready...just need to install the carseat bases into our cars...Scott's car at the very least, since that's the one she'll be coming home in. I guess we'll see if I remember what I'm doing from my carseat certification class a couple years ago! I'm no longer certified, it expired earlier this year, but hopefully I remember how to do it! :-P

Okay, I'm off to bed soonish. I plan to make tomorrow a very productive cleaning day. :-)

Oh, and guess what...tomorrow is finally SEPTEMBER!!!! Two more hours... ::::huge grins::::

Monkey Update

There's not a whole lot to report, which really is a good thing...but I'm going to babble about our Monkey anyway! :-D

I had my 36 week appt this past Wednesday, and all is well. I had another NST (non-stress test...the one where I'm on the monitor for ~20 minutes and they record baby's heartrate pattern and any contractions) before my appt, and it was perfect. My Dr said my monitor strip could go in a textbook. Good job little Monkey!! :-D I also had the infamous GBS swab test done, and will know results at next week's appointment. This will determine whether or not I will need antibiotics when in labor. Read here if you want more info. :-)

And my tummy is still measuring right on track, not huge like Monkey supposedly is. My Dr doesn't think she's huge. Neither does anyone else, just by looking at me. And I really don't think she's huge. BUT I now have a 38 week ultrasound scheduled for Sept 7th, so we will see what that one says. However, Scott and I are kinda hoping she will decide to come on Labor Day weekend...or even Labor Day...how cool would that be?? "Yeah, I was in labor on Labor Day"...hahaha. Not exactly likely, but definitely within the realm of possibility. And while that would be a fun story, I'm not feeling like that's going to happen...

Here's another bump photo. :-) I didn't see much (if any) difference between 30 and 34 weeks, but I can definitely see one between 34 and 36! :-D

8/23/10, 36w1d

And this is the lovely site that greeted me Tuesday morning when I got home from work:

Ah yes, pregnancy cankles. I've been wondering if/when I'd be acquiring mine! Goodbye ankle bones! My feet are actually only a little bit swollen...it's mostly from mid-foot up through the ankles and almost to my knees. It's kinda fun to make thumb imprints half way up my calf! It's not like I haven't seen pitting edema before (duh--it's quite common where I work, lol!), but apparently it's different...and kind of amusing...when it's ME! Okay so perhaps I'm easily amused. I think we established that fact awhile back. :-P But whatever. These monster ankles don't hurt, they only look uncomfortable. And my blood pressure is wonderful. At this very moment, they are very close to normal, and I can *almost* see my ankle bones...but by tonight they'll be marshmallows again (although not as bad as after a 12hr shift at work!). This also explains why the scale thinks I've gained 5 lbs in less than a week...water, water, water!! Oh well, at least I know why! *Sigh*

Hmmm, what else. We had our maternity photos done this past Monday, by my same wonderful work friend who did our photos last December (did I ever post any on here?? hmmm...). I can't wait to see them!! Oh, and the nursery is finally finished!! Scott and my dad labored really hard to get the closet done (they built and installed shelves...and they turned out AMAZING!) over the past couple weekends. Poor guys...what they thought would be a one day project ended up being at least 2 full days plus a few hours on a couple other days to finish things up. Once that was finished, Mom and I and then Scott and I added the final decorating touches...and now it's done!! The 23rd was our deadline because the pictures were being done in the nursery...so it HAD to be finished!

Baby showers are both done too (family/friends/church shower and then work shower), but I was waiting for pictures to write about those. :-D

Now we play the waiting game...4 weeks or less!!

Monster Baby

IF this week's ultrasound was correct, we might just skip Newborn size clothing and diapers altogether...

That's right, apparently I grow monster babies. We can't blame Scott, because he was a very normal 7 lbs 9 oz at 40 weeks and 1 day. Well, his daughter is almost that big NOW at 34 weeks and 2 days, weighing in at an approximate 7 lbs 5 oz....which is a whole 3 weeks ahead (37w1d to be exact). Granted this is all based on ultrasound measurements of the skull, abdomen and femur...how they get weight estimates from those measurements I really don't know...but holy big baby batman!! She's now above the 90th percentile.

I find it kind of ironic that the reason we even had an ultrasound this week was because I was measuring SMALL at my 32 week appointment. So my Dr wanted to make sure she was still growing appropriately and check my amniotic fluid to make sure it wasn't low. Everything is fine...I guess I just hide it well, lol.

I REALLY have a hard time believing there is 7+ lbs of baby inside me...I just don't feel that big...and I take care of newborns all the time...I know exactly how big that is...and I just don't think she's that big!! Plus these growth ultrasounds can be off by a pound or more in either direction, and they tend to over-estimate waaaay more often than under-estimating. I don't know how many times I've seen an estimate in the 10 lb range and the patient then delivers an 8 lb baby.

Here's me and Monkey on 8/10/10, 34w2d.

So, IF the ultrasound was correct and she's really packed on 4 lbs in the past 6 weeks (remember she was ~3 lbs 6 oz at 28 weeks), and she still has another 6 weeks to cook...AND they tend to gain more at the end...she has the potential to be 11+ lbs. I took care of an 11 lb baby last night at work. Ummmm, can you say TODDLER??? :::cries::: I don't want to give birth to a toddler!!! Haha, I'm just kidding, she's not going to be that big. (What's the definition of denial again?)

My guess is that they will do another growth ultrasound at 38 weeks to see just how big she is, and if she has continued on this trend I will most likely be induced at that time. OR if she's just way to huge, they'll schedule a c-section. This is just my guess from what I see happen at work all the time.

All in all, I am VERY happy with the ultrasound. So what if she's big!! I'm just thrilled that she's growing!! Keep growing (not-so)-little Monkey!! Mommy and Daddy can't wait to see you in a few weeks!! :-D

Oh, and for the record...I think she's going to come out sometime between 38 and 40 weeks weighing 8-something...I guess we'll see soon enough.

~Abigail~

Oh--sorry no ultrasound pictures...I guess both Scott and I were way too shocked by the tech's repetetive "Big baby....BIG baby!!!" to remember to ask her to switch to 3D. I am quite bummed by this...but oh well. We got really good 3D pics at 28 weeks.

Splat!

Sunday, August 8th was a bit more exciting than we anticipated. After church, Scott and I headed to Walmart for a few groceries and in search of one specific item for a friend's baby shower that afternoon...and we didn't even find it. Bummer. But the BIGGER bummer happened when I managed to trip over the ledge of the sidewalk walking out of Walmart and ended up falling on my hands and knees. It wasn't a very hard fall, and I didn't hit anything...in fact my left knee is really the only proof that I fell at all. :-P

So being the good little patient that I thought I was, I went home, filled my water bottle again and got comfy on the couch to make sure Monkey was moving and happy. She was, but I was tired and decided to go lay down for a bit and ended up falling asleep for over an hour. When I woke up, I figured I had better let my Dr know what had happened just in case, and also so I wouldn't get scolded at my appt on Tuesday when I showed up with a skinned knee. I was shocked, but even though I wasn't bleeding, wasn't contracting and Monkey was moving around lots my Dr said I definitely needed to come to the hospital for an NST--which stands for Non-Stress Test. This consists of being hooked up to the monitor to track baby's heartrate and contractions for 20 minutes to make sure she is happy in there.

So we headed out almost immediately (it was about 1pm), hoping that we'd still be able to make it to our friend's baby shower, albeit late. Well, 20 minutes on the monitor turned into a minimum of 4 hrs complete with lab work and an ultrasound to check for placental abruption (separation of the placenta from the uterus). I guess this is the standard "trauma protocol" for falls and other accidents. Everything was looking great, Monkey was extremely happy, and I was not contracting initially...but when I got hooked back up after my ultrasound I started contracting quite frequently...in fact, I told Scott at one point when they were consistanty 2-3 minutes apart and about a minute long that it was a beautiful labor pattern! LOL, not what we wanted! Fortunately they were not painful...they just felt like a squeeze or tightening around the abdomen...slightly uncomfortable, but not painful...if that makes any sense. Also, my FFN (basically a test they do to predict pre-term labor/delivery occurring within the next 2 weeks) was negative, which means Monkey WON'T be born in the next 2 weeks (obviously this test does not account for emergencies). AND, my cervical exam was 0/thick/high...translation: NOT EVEN CLOSE! Lol. So even though I've been contracting here and there since about 27-28 weeks, they have truly just been Braxton Hicks "practice contractions" and have done nothing to my cervix. Very good!

Soooo, since the contractions continued, my Dr decided to keep me in L&D and monitor me overnight. I was to stay connected to the monitor continuously except for bathroom breaks. She didn't give me anything to stop the contractions initially because stopping them may have masked a problem down the road...but once all my labwork came back normal (and showing no sings of abruption), she decided to give me Procardia to settle my uterus down. It worked, and I got 2 doses through the night. The next morning I had labs drawn again just to compare (all normal again) and we skipped the Procardia to see if the contractions came back. I did keep contracting occassionally, but the frequency died waaaaay down and there really wasn't a pattern anymore so they let me go home Monday afternoon!

I can only laugh at how a simple text message to my Dr "I don't need to come in, right?" turned into a 20 minute NST, then 4hrs, then a total 27hr stay!! But I am very happy that I DID go and even happier that everything turned out fine. Hopefully we can keep this little Monkey cooking for at least 2 more weeks!

I am being allowed to go back to work, which happens to be tonight...but I'm under strict orders to monitor contractions and if I have more than 4 in an hour that is a big no-no. If that happens, they will keep me out of work until 36 weeks...at which point if I do end up contracting and going into labor they would not stop it. For the record, though, these contractions I've been having for several weeks and also the ones on Sunday/Monday were not labor, just an "irritable uterus". I prefer grumpy uterus, lol. :-P I am a little worried about going back to work tonight, as I did start contracting again when Scott and I went out for my Dr's appt yesterday afternoon and then to the store afterwards. We were gone for less than 3 hrs total and I had had over a gallon of water already yesterday, but I started contracting anyway. As soon as we got home I got comfy on the couch and put my feet up and they stopped. But I'm wondering how I'm going to do at work for 12hrs. Granted I'm not *constantly* on my feet, but I wouldn't say there's much time for relaxation either, lol. Oh well, I guess we shall see. The good news is that I am training someone and she is at the point where she does most of the work and mostly just comes to me with questions and problems. Also, IF I were to have to stop working, I am less than 2 weeks away from that 36 week mark...so I wouldn't have to miss much work. I just hate to use ANY of my time off before she gets here, because that means less time after she arrives...but I also know the most important thing is getting her here safely.

Oh yeah...and "The Day" has finally arrived. I am off the heparin. After my fall, my Dr said it was best to stop it now as the risk of abruption or other issues is now greater than the risk of stopping the heparin. I am kinda bummed that I have to stop now, but in all liklihood she would have asked me to stop in 2 more weeks anyway. Still, it is nerve wracking. EXTREMELY nerve wracking. I am thankful she allowed me to stay on it this long, though, as originally I was supposed to stop at 16 weeks, and then 20...but I made it to 34. I feel so helpless without it! I felt helpless WITH it, but at least there was the comfort that came along with physically DOING something by injecting heparin twice a day. Now I just try not to think about it (yeah right). *Sigh*...these next 6 weeks have the potential to go by veeeery slooooooowly. Please Lord, deliver our little Monkey safely into our arms!

Phew!! That was long. I really don't expect many people to actually read all of that, but I wanted to write it all out anyway so I would remember all the details.

He makes me smile...

I love him!

The picture quality is poor, but I like it anyway. He was just being cute with Monkey's new monkey blankie that Catherine gave me. I know you read this, so thank you again, Catherine!! We both love it and know our little girl will too!!

I'm In Love!

I can't stop looking at her sweet little face!! <3 <3 <3

A few things I forgot to include yesterday:

1. We have a carseat in our house! It arrived yesterday. We ordered it Friday night. Holy fast shipping Batman!! And FREE shipping at that. I <3 Amazon. Oh yeah...we got $250 worth of Amazon.com gift cards simply for redeeming 11 months worth of VISA rewards points. We finally received the cards and were able to use them last week!! We bought the carseat, diaper bag (I was picky), and changing pad for the dresser we'll be ordering this weekend, all for $248 but $0 out of pocket...YAY!! Don't scold me for buying stuff...there's is PLENTY of stuff on our BRU registry and none of this was on it! Plus there are just a few things that, as the parents, we feel responsible to buy (furniture, carseat, and the like)...and WANT to buy. Anywho. There are only a couple more items like that, but they can wait for now. One being the breastpump...I certainly don't expect anyone else to buy that for me, lol!! Plus I haven't quite figured out which one I want yet...this bullet point is getting too long...

2. Also bought Dr. Sears Vaccine Book so we (probably "I", hehe) can start researching vaccines. I'm definitely pro-vaccine...but I tend to think we're shoving way too much into kiddos way to fast and young these days. But I don't have any solid knowledge to back up the random bits of knowledge I do have. This will help. We do plan to vaccinate (don't get me started on people who refuse vaccines altogether...GRRRR!!), but I'd like to follow a delayed/alternate schedule. One example being Hepatitis B...I didn't get that vaccine series until I started working at the hospital...I think I was 18 or 19? There's really no need to start that one at birth (like they do now...literally).

3. Hmm. Did I really only have 2 things to say? I really thought there was more...

Oh well...

(Okay, so I was trying to include links to the carseat/diaper bag/changing pad/and book but blogger was being dumb and kept messing up the HTML codes and erasing parts of my post. Over and over again. SO I took them out. Sorry.)
